How did you discover Disc Golf?
Watched a local legend in Taumarunui, Pete Boyle, throw a disc the length of a soccer field before a game one day. Had only thrown an Ultimate disc up to that point, but threw the Innova Viper a few times down the field and was hooked. Headed to the local course with him and the other local players a few days later, and have been hooked ever since. Love the challenge of throwing a disc and getting it in to that basket.
What is your proudest Disc Golf moment?
When I take a new person out to the course, and they seem half hearted to go, but by the time we are finished they are already asking when we can come back. I love it when people have the same excitement about disc golf that I still have after all these years playing. This sport is addictive.
What are your practice routines?
Putting on the back lawn 3-4 nights a week, and then at least 5 rounds at the local courses during the summer. Winter in Eastern Canada is challenging with the cold and snow, so 2 rounds a week at best, with the occasional putting session on a sunny day.
What is your go-to tip for beginners?
Keep the drivers in the bag, and learn to throw the putter and midrange first. You'll learn the flight of the disc, and they are much more forgiving while learning technique. The bonus is that as you play more, you will find that a lot of shots can be played with these discs, and can get you out of a lot of trouble.
