How did you discover Disc Golf?

I have always had a passion for the circular. Boasting a very impressive coin collection as a child, I made the obvious step to taking up yo-yoing in my early teens. My twenties saw the development of one of the finest vinyl collections this side of Roundhead Studios—not bragging, just saying. It was in my early thirties that my circular compulsion really met its critical cusp. I felt like I had met my circular ceiling until I moved next to a disc golf course at the beginning of 2020. Never has a circular contraption been so captivating and colourful. Not only that, but it’s fun, approachable, outdoors, social, dog-friendly, and, of course, incredibly fun.

What is your proudest Disc Golf moment?

Egmonster 2025. Not only my acheivement, but the acheivement of the club and the region. The tour, the team and the Taranaki all in one thrilling tournement. Proud to be part of it.

What are your practice routines?

Usually somewhere between 3-4pm my dog will look at me, and then the door, and then me, and then the door. She will repeat this process as necessary until I grab my bag and take her and her brother to the local course. It is at this point I will start playing disc golf. Usually starting on hole one but not always. I usually play with others but sometimes its just me and the dogs. When I am alone, I will sometimes work on my form or specific shots I want to improve. When I am with friends, I will practice by only throwing specific discs or trying different shots. Once a week I will take the course seriously and try to play my best, to practice my gamesmanship and composure.

What is your go-to tip for beginners?

Don't try too hard to throw far. Just find a smooth repeatable throw that looks good and is comfortable. Distance comes from timing, timing comes from repetition and you can't get the reps in if you are hurting yourself. Which reminds me, don't forget to follow through 🙂

Comment: "I am not that happy that I have to choose only one disc. But, if that is the game, then it has to be the Kea. I am lost without my approach. My atomic Kea is my go-to for overstable upshots. Point, shoot, wait for praise from your peers, accept praise, tap in and repeat. Plus mine has some really cool swirly colours in it. "
