Jackson (Jacko) Sullivan had an impressive 1st place win at the New Zealand North Island Championships that took place 21st Jan to 23rd Jan at Bella Rakha Retreat Centre and Bethells (Pae o Te Rangi). It was Jacko’s first event in 7 months and he came back with a statement, shooting 18 under par despite a healing knee injury.
Jacko’s comments on the tournament:
“Coming into the weekend I was excited to play competitive Disc Golf again after being affected by lockdowns and a freak knee piercing accident. I’d done a lot of work behind the scenes with my health and fitness so was looking forward to getting into competitor mode and feeling that vibe again.
I was excited and also nervous of what my knee was going to be able to handle. I wasn’t at full power, and I’m still not, so I had to adapt to a lot of different strokes and follow throughs.
Day one was the worst for my knee, but on day two it felt a lot better which was really handy as we played the longest lay out at Pae o Te Rangi. I managed to shoot well on this day and make up for lost ground on the first day. Out at Bethells my Kea’s were crucial in pin point approaches.
A highlight for me on the second day was not giving up after being quite a few off the pace and getting the lone birdie on the new long placement of Hole 8. Staying strong mentally, especially while physically injured, was a huge success.
Going into the final day I knew I had to hold my ground and, more importantly, maintain throughout and do my best to forget my knee pains. I managed to get a decent 5 stroke lead early in the round, but made some silly mistakes on 3 holes that really put the pressure back on me.
On the second to last hole I played it to give myself a 2 stroke lead heading into the final Island hole. Played the last tee shot safely into the short part of the island to secure par. I laid up to tap out securing my second North Island Champs victory.”
